Pace extruder groove chainrings - why?

Same here, I see the theory but my burning practical questions are:
- what happens when the little grooves get blocked up with mud?
- do you need a tooth pick to clean mud out of the grooves (oh happy days with a 46T ring)?

I clean mine after a ride and the crud usually comes out quickly, I can't say that I've ever had a problem. If it's left to dry then it gets difficult and needs the old toothbrush and hot water to clear. I have just checked mine again and one set are "blued" whereas the other set are standard aluminium.
Also I've seen comments on the internet about the lack of changing steps/pins/teeth on the chain rings, but I have never had a problem and get clean shifts without the need for the changing steps/pins/teeth. I just make sure my front mech is adjusted correctly.
Anyone else had a problem with them?

They just look fantastic!
Owned a set of the first generation and fitted tot my Marin. Excellent schifting performance and relatively minimal wear (probably due to the hard annodize layer).
Now using a set of the second generation on my current bike. Love and like these a lot!
Unfortunately hard to find in NOS condition

I think they're way cool

These are going on my Pace once I have a BB axle
