Dialled bikes do some reasonably cheap steel framed bikes that might also tempt you.

I have an Inbred and I like it a lot. its the older SS version which isn't disc compatible so I run it with Avid Arch Rivals.

Set up with a short stem, risers and rigid forks its a perfect play bike, good fun when my fitness allows me to ride it properly.

They get slated by some but they're good bikes for the money.
