modded 1997 Titanium Phoenix

That's not my point. Does a Classic Ferarri Sports Racer belong on the British roads in winter? It wasn't designed to be there. Ratticossa Pass, Targa Fiorio or driving down into Portofino on a balmy summers evening is where they belong. You would not wear wellies on the Beach would you now?
This is a Mountain Bike- a bike designed to go anywhere at any time, City Street, Mountain Pass, sun, wind, rain, desert to East Coast mud. All seasons, all weathers.
I think it is stunning and would want to ride it all year round.

I understand your argument and am attracted to the purity and romanticism of it. But realistically if you've got 2 bikes or more why not set them up to be season specific? Having more than 1 bike allows you to set them up so that they thrive in certain conditions.

This bike was ridden in the mud before:

And it will get ridden in the mud again. In my experience, the mud issues with chainstay mounted brakes are overstated. That said, I had a mudguard made for the rear brake.

Keeps the mud out of the mech and should keep the bike working smooth.
