The elevated chain-stay suspension version. I've always thought of it as the Merlin Elevator or E-stay.

so i picked up a more modern merlin, from around 2003. I can't seem to find a serial number on it. Non on the bottom bracket, and none on the drop-outs.

Its supposed to have been employee owned, so I suppose its possible that there is no serial.
 
Late '92 (?) Mountain, 7841. 1" headset, S-stays, not double-butted, no-thread BB (circlips). Currently has post-'02 (?) decals (where the M and E are separate) and head badge and declares itself an "xlm" (in italics).
