In a future near you...

For me it's an aesthetic choice as much as anything else - on the flip-side some people I know can't understand why I ride a 94 Specialized Rockhopper...

Re:

I have an issue with the fact we now have 29", 27.5", and something called 650b?? What's that all about? Presumably they all have their relative merits, but surely that's a lot of info to try and retain if you're making a decision on buying a new bike...? :?

And Dad was saying he can put 700c tyres on his 29" to make it into a touring bike....why? Just buy a damn tourer or racer if that's what you want!!

And we have 130mm, 135mm and the one that caught me out 142mm - although to be fair, if I had looked at pictures I would have seen they were obviously for some thru-axle...

I thought 650b and 27.5ers were the same thing? I bought some 26inch tyres that were apparently old 26 inch and didn't fit modern inches.

And the fact that I have a 27.2mm seat tube but a 1 and 1/8 inch headtube... 26 inch wheel with 22mm rim width... gotta love standardisation!

I didn't know 27.5 size wheels were being used untill 20 seconds ago  and i fully agree with the main point of view so far as i've seen quite a few of these so called modern machines which to me just lack character and the only thing i can honestly say about modern bikes is if their what we've got to look forward to then i'm very happy not owning one as my 09 Rockrider was to new for me and the alloy frame felt dead unlike cromo and reynolds tubing and yes i love V brakes to death which with luck i'll sort out my old set for my old Raleigh ;) ..

Re:

I was watching a recent round of the world DH. They showed each rider beside their bike before they set off. I was so disappointed that all the bikes were basically 1 of 3 designs, they were all similar coloring. The only bike that actually stood out was an Orange DH bike with a big single pivot.
Back in the mid to late 90s when DH really started firing on all cylinders you could tell exactly what bike the rider was on from miles away, mainly due to the color and frame design. Now days it's almost impossible.
I'm not sure anything now days will become an instant classic. I do like the top Cannondale Jekyll however, lefty fork, pull shock on the rear, good on Cannondale for still continuing to still be producing successful bikes that don't follow the norm.

27.5 is 650b.

Tony there has always been a number of nominally 26" standards. There's 26x1-1/8 and 26x1-3/8 with rim BSD measurement of 597mm which is mostly a Schwinn thing. There's 26x1-3/8 with 590mm rims which is more common and seen on lots of old pommy 3 speed bikes. Then there's "our" 26" with a 559mm rim.

Anyway, future classics? I can see some of the more successful All-Mountain rigs being desired, and likely surviving. Specialized Enduro, Santa Cruz Nomad/Tallboy/Bronson/5O1O, Yeti SBxx, stuff like that. I think the other categories have been in such a state of flux nothing will be particularly iconic.

Interesting huh ... all this while broad-spectrumed and non-delineated sexual identities have become all the rage.

I think some of the carbon fibre full suspension bikes look really nice - but I'm damned if I could tell one from another. Ditto modern titanium and fat bikes.

I'm sure some will become classics in their own right. For every bike, there will be some teenager who lusts after it, but can't afford to buy it. Eventually, they'll get older/richer and the bike cheap enough secondhand for them to fulfil their dream.

Re:

I genuinely think the most recent round of yeti's has decent swoop to the frame that is the closest thing I've seen to classic in a while.

I do actually want one...

Re:

20 years ago I remember most of the guys cherishing their British and European classic motorbikes and more modern bikes were passed off as "souless mass produced Jap crap".Now,these once dismissed bikes are even more sought after with prices of 350LCs/CB750s/GT750s etc gone through the roof.Same with the car market it wasnt long ago the MK2 Jag owner turned their nose up to Escorts etc and the like, now those Escorts are almost as sought after. The kids nowadays getting their kicks from 29ers will pine for them again in their 40s like we have done with ours.I think the design and character is not important, its the memories and nostalgia that makes them classics of the future.
