I can't understand why you don't want people to show restored bikes ?
We all have beaters in the shed we ride and love but I can't see that anyone would spend their hard earned on a tank of fuel to go see a load of bikes that although loved are not looked after ?
There is room for both surely as for riding them then you can do that with a great bike too as you know I ride my Altitudes and did Mayhem solo on one of them. I replace the worn components though and touch up the paint here and there so they look great still.
Is it some inverse snobbery to be proud of owning something nice but letting it look unloved like a bloke who owns a Ferrari but refuses to clean it ?
Fact is the retro bubble seems to be deflating as we all get older ,can it be pumped up a bit ? Who knows

No you get me wrong, I like the pristine stuff as well. I just don't think it needs a concourse and judging for people to need to show them.

Bring them along and show them off, bring the general riders, bring them all along, the eccentric, the weird, the generalised, the one offs, the proclosets.

look at chat about them, take them for a spin if the owner doesn't mind.
You don't need somebody to say you've got a good bike. I personal ly think the 'show and judge' puts a lot of people off. For the same reasons BotM a load of crock. (Even PotM voting is the same and I run that at the moment I prefer it to see all the pictures excellent or shite.). OK maybe not activator...

Re:

Fair enough thats all good yes
I think Tom wanted to get a bit of outside opinion on judging and the general public also had a vote which I think was less stuffy and a great idea.
I love the idea of riding each others bikes that would be amazing we could get some together for a shootout like the old magazine reviews

why not tag it along with the national points series, at clipstone. retro course an all ;) show n shine, not concourse, race, rider, drink and race.......sorta thing

100% agree. 'Friendly competition and showing off a bit' is part of the British psyche, that's why car shows are so popular. Been to enough in the Beemer community to appreciate that. Peeps don't get upset and refuse to return if they don't win normally but they do put some effort/£££ in when they attend. With lots of different categories peeps have more chance of getting a rosette/whatever in some class or just participating in their niche. All the other stuff too will just add to the mix, jumble, limbo, jumps, stunts, kids, etched etc. To repeat, I'd like to see a resurgence in interest in retro bikes and all that entails. Its more affordable than classic cars for most hardworking peeps, so new visitors could get hooked, join and reenergise our community. Let's be honest it needs reenergising ! The retrobike mood in the U.S. seems far more upbeat, new Mountainbiking museum opened, Keysville Classic and other retro race series etc

Re:

All sounds very similar to the Old World Mountain Bike Championships that ran in 2009 (Holland) and again in 2010 (Wales): --> http://www.owmtbc.org/

Ride outs, concourse competition (very entertaining), guest speaker (Tim Davies), bar, quiz, beer, old magazines, trails, hill climb, BBQ etc. It had it all.

Organised by Retrobike's very own mrkawasaki and ededwards.

The climate has changed since then though... I don't think there is the same appetite for such an event at the moment.

Re:

Don't we do pretty much this at Mountain Mayhem each year?

If we want to attract more "punters" could we not put the Marquee/ gazeebo in the arena?

Nothing wrong with our lepper colony / private party area at Mayhem

Admittedly its hard to find and aside from being track side no one stops or comes back, although many are scarred by the heckle & banter as they ride through

Marquee/Presence in the main area is one of the most grounded and realistic ideas I've read so far, however that would need someone to give up time to man it and there would be the cost of hiring it.

Re:

I think that we should still do it.

The captive audience idea is the best IMHO, and as has been said many times we get:-

Possible converts.
Facilities provided / shared.
A start that in a few years may sprout out to our own weekend.

And i'm sure that we can organize a piss up in a field?????
I'm happy to go pretty much any where as I live in the middle of this fair isle.....just don't come here as it's as flat as a fart!!!!!
