Very true! You can refer to the feedback forum and also check all a member's posts in their profile. You can get a pretty good idea of who they are from these, but it ain't foolproof...
I'd add that you can get an idea of the other party by their participation in the forums. I've shipped stuff before receiving payment to people I feel have a vested interest in the site.
