How can I repair this M737 shifter?

Dirt Disciple
DIY noob here. It looks like the old cable in my Deore XT shifter has somehow worn a hole through this plastic part (photographed). It causes the cable to sit in the groove and jam up the mechanism. Is this shifter salvageable or does it need replacing with something else?

My idea:
1) Clean and degrease the plastic there thoroughly
2) Wash with soap and water to remove degreaser
3) Take old cable and cut from the nub/knob about 10" or so
4) Very carefully with your fingers rub the nub/knob with grease
5) Insert into shifter and secure to keep from sliding out
6) Superglue 5 minute cure + baking soda
OR
6) Two-part epoxy
7) Put a piece of electrical tape or scotch tape over the perimeter there where the hole rubbed through
 Do not cover the nub/knob at the top because you will need to slide out the cable once your adhesive has dried
9) Let dry

Or any other method you see fit in building up material around that hole. Or...maybe the effort is not worth it. I have had good success with the superglue + baking soda. This combo causes an interesting chemical reaction and makes the adhesion very strong without being brittle.
