Happy 20year Boughtday Marin Bear Valley - Updated, 30year!

REtrouble

Cleland Fan
Not a particularly exciting bike but Happy Birthday (bought-day) to my old Bear Valley, I took these photos this evening on a short birthday ride, it's 20 years ago today that I wheeled it out of Scotby Cycles in Carlisle (probably listening to "Guru Josh" "Infinity" on the way home!), 419 quid lighter , doesn't sound much now, but it was a lot of money to me then, made a little easier by trading in my not very old & not very good Peugeot MTB (can't remember the model, white with red & blue "flecks" IIRC). I don't generally hang onto receipts but had this one. Spread out over 20 years it's cost around 50p per week including maintainance!

For it's birthday it's had probably the best clean, in those 20 years! Obviously it's not original having had bits & bobs changed over the years, I painted the forks, stem & bars metallic blue (basecoat & 2K lacquer) shortly after I bought it just to make it a bit different, removed the incredibly easy to peel off "Bear Valley" decals because I thought it was a crap name. Kelloggs reflector was added as a joke to offend my riding buddies at the time, it's been there ever since. I totaled the rear wheel within a year or so & got it re-built with a Wolber AT20 rim, the front is still the original Araya RX-7.
I recently put the Marin Rockstar tyres on that I'd had laying about that came off a Pine Mountain 18 years ago, I thought I may as well use them, they are in incredible shape for their age, no perishing. The seat I've just put on, can't remember if it came off the Bear Valley, I think more likely the Pine mountain, it's fabric covered, anyone? Everything else is original except the usual service stuff & the recent Ergon grips (sorry........it's my age you know......)

Though it's not in bad shape it's a wonder as it really did see a lot of action in the Lake District where I lived at the time, I did a lot of riding footpaths that you'd probably get arrested for now, I used to regularly ride down "Skiddaw" the fell behind Keswick, I remember one ride from Grange in Borrowdale to the top of Skiddaw then to the top of Helvellyn & back to Grange in one go, quite a slog, if anyone knows the area.

I haven't been totally faithful to it, I bought the above mentioned Pine Mountain a couple of years later, the Bear Valley was sold to my boss at the time, luckily for me he rode it once, found out it required effort so put it in the back of his garage, this turned out to be quite handy when the Pine Mountain & me were written off by an old Land Rover aimed by an even older cateracted farmer, when the full length cast was taken off my leg & replaced by a short cast from knee to ankle I realized I could probably ride a bike, so the Bear valley returned back into my life, riding it with a cast on my leg while waiting to heal & get back to work. Though I carried on cycling, the time recovering, followed by a few changes of work & eventually a move to Spain meant cycling took a bit of a back seat for a few years, the Bear Valley has been used but infrequently (spending quite a long spell looking sad hung on the wall), in the past four years or so I've been cycling more & more, even cycling from UK to Spain last year (Dawes "bitsa"), as well as other bikes it now getting ridden again, it may not be flash & it may be heavy but it still makes me smile.

Happy 20th Boughtday my Bear Valley, heres to 20+ more!

Yep, mine was £419 to - but from Mike Cookson's :D

I reckon yours must be a just a bit newer than mine though as your stickers are still on  the stickers fell off the first batch and I believe they changed the glue, certainly the replacements they sent stuck very well

Mine came with a Lycra covered seat - I think it was gel as I seem to recall it breaking down and going lumpy ?

Oh yes, mine threw me off coming down skiddaw = three piece collar bone, a crisped front wheel and a long walk down with one arm shoved in my fleece pocket and the other dragging the bike

If my stickers are the newer ones I hate to think what the old ones must have been like, mine are only on because I've never ridden it on windy days......

That must be the B.V saddle then, it is lycra covered gel & just starting to go a little bit out of shape, it looks worse in the photos than it is, I must have taken it off not that long after buying the Bear Valley, I didn't know I still had it, until I had a rummage through my box of cast off bike bits looking for anything original to stick back on for it's birthday.

You've good memories of Skiddaw then......ha ha, I used to ride up the road to a parking area behind "Latrigg" then carry up the footpath riding the last bit to the summit where it levels off a bit, I remember coming down the steep bit without a chance of stopping, no helmet or anything.... young & daft..... now I'm old & daft  Is that where you had your "off" ?
I used to wear lightweight walking boots & have clips & straps on the bike, I knew one or two who were starting to go clipless but it seemed pointless to me as so much time was spent carrying the bikes up the fells on paths that were unrideable going up.

Yes, they could be the same batch of stickers then

I can't remember the name of the route without looking at the map (at dads) but it was 18 years ago though

We were camping and I went up with my brother. Carried the bikes most of the way up and only rode about 10 mins down  I don't really know what happened - just remember hitting my head, hearing a crack (which I thought was my helmet breaking), sitting up, swearing (lots) when I spotted my bike (brand new 231's - front one folded) standing up rubbing my bleeding knee as that really hurt, rubbing by shoulder as it ached and then I felt the big sharp lump  I told my brother what I had done and he wouldn't believe me until I put his hand on my shoulder and he went a funny colour  I think the max speed on the avocet was only 24 mph !

He rode down alone to get his car from the campsite and meet me at the top car park (small car park at the top of a twisty road through the trees) and then come back up to meet me and take the bike down but by the time he was back I was at the car park waiting. I reckon the thing that helped most was my shoes - specialised hot dogs which had two football studs in each heel, still slipped a few times with those on though - not nice landing on your arse as you can't put your hands down first as one arms busted and the other is holding a bike on your shoulder. You can feel everything move when you land :-( it's funny looking back at it now but it wasn't at the time ! I reckon the worst bit was in the hospital on my knees trying to get my arm vertical so by brother could pull my (tight fitting non stretch) fleece off over my head - it's a moutain equipment one and they wanted to cut it off  my mum stil wears it for walking (it doesn't fit me anymore  )

It's funny you should say that, the Pine mountain I got to replace it was a really nice bike (by then Marin had changed to "afterburner" seat stays), though it was much lighter & faster it wasn't as nice to ride as the Bear Valley, I never worked out why, maybe the B.V just fitted me better?

I agree, I've ridden 50,000 miles on a 1990 Palisades!

Drop the stem down a bit though I suggest, it looks as though that one is beyond the min insertion line. This can lead to unfortunate 'stem-pops-out-no-steering' kind of events...
