The story with this Grove Innovations Assault goes pretty much like this: bike resides in a shop window for ages, when some day Retrobike forum member Rody (former Grove employee) gets hands on it. Several years later Rody eBays it, I think to fund the start up of Groovy Cycles. The bike is covered on this great Grove resource from Michael J Hermann: the Assault when Rody's

I and fellow forum member Roy (aka yo-eddy) spot the Assault on eBay. Roy goes for it and wins the auction. The Grove stays at Rody's place, as Roy plans a trip to the US. Roy and Rody become good friends. Two years later Roy visits the US. He stays at Rody's place and Roy visits Durango, Moab and many other great places. The Assault is his ride on the most beautifull trails.

Back in Holland I buy the Assault for the same price Roy got it for though eBay. Several years later it is time for an overhaul. The Grove is in pretty immaculate condition, but the grease is sitting in there for over twenty years etc. In the new build there will also be some upgrades. The Post Moderne post was faded in the same style XT posts do.

I am used to take my time for projects. Meanwhile I changed my mind on the post and the bottom bracket: the Tioga DL2000 post went in favour of a ControlTech, the XT bottom bracket went in favour of a new, slightly wider Cook Brothers unit.

Below pictures are taken earlier today:

The camera wasn't able to catch the neon colours accurately in sunny daylight. Live the colours are slightly deeper, warmer.

So this is the current status. Thanks for watching.

Re:

Fantastic read on a great bike. Love to see this on a next Dutch retro gathering!

Hi Jonrock, the last couple of years I devided my hobby time between road and off road. Off road being my initial love, but since 2007 or so I started collecting fine road bikes. Of both I am happy with what I have now. My preferences with mountainbikes are Japanese and US steel, but I have some odd balls too. I still spend several thousand kilometers on bicycles annually.
