Hi there, I’m trying to find out the age of this Falcon Racing bike?

Does anyone understand how the serial number works?

Thanks in anticipation

Could be a Black Diamond. Link to mine is below. As @Guinessisgoodforyou said the serial numbers are a bit of a lottery. @Mandobob is a Falcon expert and may be able to offer more insight. From the head badge I’d guess it was 1970s, but Falcon weren’t consistent with what they fitted.

Going by the chainset I'd put it early 1980s as those cranks were introduced while I worked there. I doubt that it's a Black Diamond though as I don't remember them in that colour. Pretty certain that it's another model which was also available in a sort of metallic gold finish.

Was that the Olympic or Majorca?

I am pretty sure it is December 1979. M shows the frame was made by Miki in Japan, 9 is the year number and M is the month (12th letter of the alphabet, missing out I). If the factory type foil head badge is original (and it is the original type, not the Lloyds replacement type), It will be between 1978 and 1982. With 10 speed and no Black Diamond decal the model is probably the Panther, which is in catalogues for the years 1978-80.

Yeah, that's one of the imported framesets, not a Majorca though as they were either Pearl White or an attractive sort of Grey/Blue colour. I'd guess at the saddle (and probably the seat pin too) being later replacements as they look to be to high-spec for the level of bike in that era.
