When it comes to mtb tires fatter is better.

That's a bit of a generalisation and assumes everyone is riding the same terrain. I happily run 1.7 z max if I'm riding dry compact fire roads if though I,m riding muddy slippery Rocky terrain bigger tyres are needed.

Good point but, I stand by my statement regardless. I'd pass you on your 1.7's like you were standing still on any fire road. I've ridden trails all over this globe, I've yet to prove myself wrong. I'll go one step further; High volume tires are still the best kept secret in mountain biking.
