Cracking frame mate...[Pace Content]

Not really surprised it's cracked with that shim in it. :?

Agree, still as cracks go it's not the worst place (like a headtube or BB shell) and at least you know what has caused it, i recon it'll be fine welded with the correct size decent length seatpost.

But, mate, your bike, it's pink dude

Deffo looking into heat treating it though, just need to find one locally.

Far from an expert but heat treating may be necessary with the amount of welding on a new frame but a local repair may be fine, i can imagine Pace taking frames apart and puting them back together as you said.

If you are going to get the frame heat treated you'd need to be sure it's not going to do more harm than good.

TBH I would say a good alloy welding specialist will be able to fix that, just going through a similar thing at the moment,I thought my Klein was scrapped, showed it to a local specialist(who's apparently nationally renouned for his alloy welding skill) and he thought nothing of a repair an re-heat treat(if necassary,he thinks the crack is so small he'll probably not get it too hot).
I've always been very sceptical of fixing alloy, probably cos I work in the steel industry which is easy to re-weld,but I'm willing to give this guy a go as you have, good luck!

Thanks guys,

Just got off the phone from Kevin who did the job, frames all ready to collect and all for a paltry $24.00 NZ!

He had a chat to the resident bike nut at Kia Ora who said it wouldn't need heat treatment, and that if I went ahead with it it may not make it any stronger considering the age of the frame and all that.

So, pick the frame up, new paint job and job's a good un!

Rich

Good point on both comments...

Not thought about the heat treating aspect, it's 7000 series aluminium, and reading various texts, Duncan MacDonald use to whip frames apart and chuck them back together again...

We'll see....

If it is fixable, pinky's going to be changing colour...*rasp* had a fella the other day try and take me out in his car...it was either me he was targeting or pinky, luckily for us both, he swerved away and drove on!!

Rich

haha that was me!!!!! I wouldnt have bothered if i had known the fram was cracked!!!

just kidding  Hope it gets fixed!!! if you need one to borrow in the meantime just ask mate - i have a few you can borrow

Kevin doesnt look happy holding that frame mate - doesnt strike me as a chap who would be comfortable in pink!!!

thats just down the road from me too!!

Neill - Quite alot which was strange, still can't think of anything else that may have caused it...

NPorterNZ - Many thanks for the offer, I've joined the dark side and bought a Fausto Coppi road bike of tradem for £300 which I thought was quite good.

Still, if you're not using your Prestige... :)

Rich

p.s. when my bike's back together we must go out for a jaunt!!!!

Great attitude, great site, and great colour and great frame. But oh I'm so nervous of alu. I have no first hand reason to be, just wel just what ya see innit. Good on ya not giving up. I'd chuck a solid long post in there. Theres a hardcore post I saw on the balfa website which might fit it you were not going Thomson or whatever. could be worse. Good luck, and keep it pink! :D
