Very nice work. Just one comment that maybe useful for the Dof E award, would they look for things being fitted to the correct torque using a torque wrench? Thinking about the cassette lockring, and the stem, bars etc? I very rarely use one myself, only when fitting carbon parts or suspension fittings but wondered if it might improve the 'evidence' side of fitting things correctly? Not meant as a criticism as like I said I wouldn't use one myself on a build like this but just thinking what they might be looking for.

Unfortunately DofE accreditation is now so impersonal that I doubt it very much. They will spend more time checking on the volunteer ‘Speacialist’ who will be signing off on this project and will only ask (in this case) if the school has recieved photographic evidence. This won’t even be sent to them. When you actually look at the on-line system it’s depressingly open to abuses.

But in our house “can’t you just tell them I built it Dad?” would never fly and my daughter knows not even to bother asking.

Ps. In easily 40 plus complete re-builds over the years I’ve never used a torque wrench on a bicycle.
Not had one fall apart on me yet.... :D (famous last words)

Re: Father & Daughter Claud Butler Shaman Silver DofE project

Homework has arrived……

A nice & tidy Vetta Gel, ;) although the catalogue image has the word ‘GEL’ in blue, I guess to tie in with a blue bike maybe? We thought this one with the yellow lettering might make a better fit with our black & yellow detailing.
It’s not in immaculate condition, the rails need a little work of course and the lettering has flaked off in a few places, but the cloth covering is in remarkable condition. (and it weighs half a kilo!! )

Scarlett has an idea that she can mix up some textile paints and tidy these printed logos up, not sure what her paints are made of, I guess some kind of flexible acrylic and yes, I’m not sure either if they will last very long on the saddle. But never mind, finding out is all part of the fun and they will look great for the photos....

Re:

Now this is a proper build thread, I've enjoyed reading through it so far.
Lots of nicely thought about little touches gone into this, have you sourced a suitable drinking vessel yet?

Cheers Jimo....
Yes, we have a nice box of bits and bats all ready to go on... but I’ve told her we can’t continue with the ‘nice clean build-up’ till she’s finished with the resto/cleaning bits.
This shouldn’t be too much a drag as it’s only the saddle left that needs attention, but as I’ve said before. I’m not doing it for her! ;)

I know we’re getting close to Halloween ..... but is Peachy getting a bit excited above “bits and ..... BATS” !

I’ll bet poor old predictive text or spell checker will get the blame

Re: Father & Daughter Claud Butler Shaman Silver DofE project

Bits & bats, bits & doings.... both fine round this way :|

You been at the cider again me old carrot cruncher? :D

Anyway.... putting regionalism aside...

I forgot Scarlett had bought her own Deore stickers off of eBay so these needed applying then a couple of coats of Matt acrylic lacquer.

Scarlett says that she fully aware that they are not the correct ones and that they probably won’t last long, so Mr Cheesy-wotsits doesn’t need to bother stating the obvious (her words not mine)
