The 217s are very good.

One thing to consider is $$$ though. I good set of NOS 217s is at least $100-120+++U.S.

The newer mavic 317 is nearly identical to the 217. Comes in black or silver 32h/36h and has a machined side wall for better performance. Several places online still have them for 60US a pair.

The Mavic 717 is also an option. Likely the best 26" clincher ever. It's a bit more $$ but still likely less than NOS stuff.

Thanks for that jim.
Did 317 come in 317 and 317 SUP?

And 717?

Weight wise are they more or less the same? (217/317/717)

Not sure on the SUP. I think the evolution went 217-220-317 and than the 717 is a different beast.

Weight wise, I don't have a spare 717 to weigh the rim alone. Here are some weights:
217 32h - 392g
317 32h - 447g
231 32h - 437g
I run the 717 with Xtr m900 hubs on my yo Eddy. Wicked lite :)

Re:

The 717 is what was a 517. The top end Mavic MTB rim.

717 are about 420g not light even by Retro standards but are strong last a long time have a big brake surface and work well. They're not heavy, just not 400g or less.

Flaws are some can have a wedge dislodge in them and come loose causing a clicking sound. no idea if the new style (badge anyway) 2015 rims altered this. Also as with all the 517/717 they can crack around the eylets, but the rim is probably near it's end of life then anyway, you may see raised bump quite soon though.

In retro terms my favourite are Araya RM395 Team followed by the slight later revision RM395 TeamXC.

The original had a different profile (concave brake surface and a slightly pointier profile) and was lighter.

I don't think I have a NOS 517 to weigh for you.

FC is right on the arayas. I have RM400 Pros as well, but I think they are a year or two earlier. I have a set with XT730/2s on my 91 brodie and another NOS set with m900s. I think I have a new RM400'rim I could weigh.

400/395 ran alongside each other (pretty much)
400 being the none eyelet but beefier version. 395 Team had it's own profile, but on the change to 395 TeamXC it moved to a 400 profile.
Araya have the catalogues on their site so it's easy enough to search for
http://www.araya-kk.co.jp/rim/archive.htm

400 = 400g
395 = 395g
but it never is quite like that
395 Team was 395 g or lighter, but the TeamXC was quite a bit heavier at 410/420g iirc, can go check as I have a few of them. Can check 717 weights if needed to.

Looks like the 400ProXC gained weight as well http://weightweenies.starbike.com/listi ... ?type=rims

My opinion is the Bonty BCX1 and 2 are not the best rims as they are the old fashioned pinned rims, a bit like M231's or cheap rims so you have the joining split, similar problem with campag rims.
Araya was welding these up and later Mavic caught on with the SUP rims and welded them up too.

Thanks for that, I always wondered how the tech and constructions changed - engineering wise.
