Bikepacking on a retro bike?

I guess the question is how off-road is the terrain, however weight weenie the gear is, its still a lot to be lugging around unless good weather and just a bivvy. On trails and tracks could use racks, and then leave the gear when need be. Guess depends where you are going ? If really in the wilds, I'd be tempted to sling everything in my old "retro" land rover. Doesn't say in original post where going, south to the Alps ?

Bikepacking is yet another trend in today's mtb world. Basically, a fancy name for cycle-touring offroad and carrying as much luggage as possible on the frame instead of racks to theoretically improve maneuverability and clearance.

not sure how much having the stuff on frame is really going to improve things on rougher ground, or is this an example of another trend, reinventing something to boost need for new kit and gain a new market as trendy rather than old fashioned which touring can be seen to be, done by "older" cyclists.
