Hi, is there a simple way to establish what BB will work in a frame thats come without one other than checking the original spec somehow and also if using a different even if age appropriate crank then how does that fit into the mix?
(I assume a bunch of measuring is involved..)

We're talking square taper mid 80's era....for example if a frame originally had a BB with 1.37" X 24 T on it then assume another BB with those numbers english thread would work fine or does it vary by manufacturer? After that assume checking the spindle size somehow for clearance, especially if using a different to original crank?

Any BB needs to be compatible first with the frame (80's MTB will more than likely be British thread, in either 68 or 73mm width), and second with the chainset (most will take a standard Shimano taper pattern, but the length needed may vary).

Thanks...def english threads, standard taper...so spindle length is the decider I guess to match the crank & BB width.

I'll get out my tape measue!
