Thanks Old Ned
Vittorio (since 1935) is from cheese town Alkmaar in Holland. The name 'Vittorio' is derived from the 'Alcmaria Victrix', what is Latin. It is included in the city's coat of arms. During the 80 years' war, in 1573, all land surrounding Alkmaar was flooded with water, what made the Spanish army give up. It is said that from here it was a turning point in our (Dutch) struggle with the Spanish.
The name 'Vittorio' was chosen when riders as Coppi and Bartali did very well. It is not an actual Italian word, but the association with the mentioned riders and Italy is there and that was the intention.
