I'd agree with that. I have a Pine Mountain, which got all chipped up when I lived in the UK. However, like you say, nothing much happened.
I then moved to Singapore, 90% humidity and the rust started tracking and bubbling under the paint.
After returning to the UK three years later, and after a respray, I am again acquiring chips but again they are not spreading.
I think the most important thing is dry storage.
