1992 Specialized S-Works

Retro Newbie
This is my first post on the forum so please move my question if it's in the wrong section. I have a fairly decent collection of '80s and '90s mountain bikes and recently picked up a 1992 s-works. It is pretty much stock with the exception of the tires, saddle, and handlebars. My question is were the S-works a version of the Stumpjumper or were they a model of their own? I have done some searching and haven't found a whole lot about this exact year and model. Thanks in advance!

S-Works are the factory team, racing level edition. Rarely even in the same catalogue as all the other bikes, even the Stumpjumpers.

Nowadays there are S Works versions of most of the regular high end bikes from Specialized, but in 1992 that MTB would have been an "S Works" model not a Stumpjumper model - they were a model of their own.

Looking at your frame its a M2 type frame, which did not appear (at least in the regular Specialized, non-S Works range) until 1993. Are you sure yours is 92? A serial number with 1992 in it might actually just mean it was made in 92 for the 93 range.

Great looking bike and a fantastic find !!

I'm actually not sure, it has 92 in the SN so that's what I was going by. Thanks for the explanation, that's what I was looking for!

It is a 1992 Frame - M2 tubed frames were available from '91 onwards. S Works frames for that model year were available in both Metal Matrix (M2) and also Steel versions.

It looks in very good shape - these earlier frames were prone to the paint peeling off. Will be interested to see what you do with it :)

I probably won't do much of anything with it but ride it next summer. I try to keep them as original as possible and the paint of this one is very good. One seat stay has some definite scratching down the side of it but overall it's in excellent condition.

I was able to get a few pics of the rest of my collection tonight so I thought I'd add those. Giant ATX7700 is all stock with Campagnolo rims! Killer V500 and both Rockhoppers are all stock. Trek 7000 has some mods but is clean.
