MMMMmmmm... a carbon weightweenie build. A man after my own heart :D :D :D

FWIW, My trek OCLV came in under 20lb with front sus, so set your sights high and go for it!!

Hahaha ... I don't think I'll get that low. If a CSX EMS got in just under 20lbs with all 1991 bits, I'm aiming for 21-22lbs with the same vintage parts (maybe sneak to 1993 for some kooka levers :D)

I went all out with my retro-mod rider of a few years back. Got it down below 18lbs. It was a wheeler Ti and I cheated a bit with a trigon fork and 1x8 drivetrain ;)

Love the OCLVs ... Similar look to CSX.

Re:

Took an epic fall on the trail today. Sucking back wine and watching my legs do an Aurora Borealis imitation.

So ...

I started weighing stems! I don't really have a ton of options outside of a pile of Syncros stems and the one Salsa. Neat looking at the variations of the stems.

I think I can get close to the weight of the bontrager stem/bar.

Stems: 1 1/8 Quill
Syncros 2nd Gen Noodle 130 mm 10 degree rise - 251g
Syncros 2nd Gen Noodle 120 mm 5 degree rise - 240g
Syncros 2nd Gen Noodle 130 mm 10 degree rise - 261g
Syncros 2nd Gen Noodle 145 mm 5 degree rise - 267g
Syncros 2nd Gen 160 mm 15 degree rise - 250g
Syncros 2nd Gen 140 mm 15 degree rise - 230g
Syncros 2nd Gen 140 mm 0 degree rise - 227g
*all Syncros stems measured with pro series ti bolt and aluminum expander (saves 35g)
Syncros HangDoggy - 35g
Salsa Roller Stem 125mm 15 degree rise - 375g

Leaning towards the 140mm 15 degree rise Syncros stem with the HangDoggy. Close to the lightest and I think the fit will be better for me. Probably need a few rides to sort this.

Dang thing still has the price tag on it. $159.99 cdn!!! That can't be right.

Re: 1991 Kestrel CS-X Build - lots of retro weight weenies listings

Just a bit of a sizing mock up. These aren't the wheels I'll use or the seat. The fit will be nice with a zero rise syncros. I saved 15 grams using a ritchey hanger over the hang doggy and another 4 grams using tioga grips over the ODIs.

Loving the black and ti

Next steps are to have the cranks and brakes redone in Ti colour and sort some wheels. So far my ringle/217s are the lightest but they are blue ... Won't match.

Re: 1991 Kestrel CS-X Build - lots of retro weight weenies listings

Weighed a bunch of saddles:

1992 Wheeler Ti - 253g
1992 Selle Flite Ti Perforated: 213g
1989 Avocet Racing - 402g
1990 Avocet Racing II - 368g (really a rebadged Selle Turbo)
1990 Avocet Racing - 405g
1991 Avocet Racing - 397g
1993 Vetta SP Vanadium - 207g
1992 Vetta SL - 199g
1992 Viscount Ti - 207g

I have a perforated 1992 Vetta SL on a bike in storage I can use, but until then ...

Perforated Selle Flite Ti ...

My DBR Axis TT is 19.88lb as it stands with Mag 21 (SL Ti) bar ends and pedals. Not sure if the spec might be a bit late for your build, but if it helps in any way....

Cheers :)

I've seen that bike on here. It's awesome

I don't think I'll get sub 20 if I stay around 1992 vintage parts. I cheated a bit with the Kooka levers and I'm trying to dip into my parts department and not break the bank.

I am leaving some grams on the table that will add up to avoid making this think look like a rainbow of colours and oddball parts.

Pretty, light, and not too $$$y. Also needs to be tough enough to ride :)

Re: 1991 Kestrel CS-X Build - lots of retro weight weenies listings

I don't like to mix and match, but it looks like I'll need to on this. The seat tube for CSX is 35.7mm, which makes it too big for the Suntour XC Pro front derailleur I wanted to use. The only thing that works is a Shimano XT732 infinity band derailleur. At 120g it's the lightest weight option, which is a plus. Would have preferred a matching derailleur pair, but I don't want to risk damage to the carbon.
