Shellac is brewing at the moment and will see how they turn out tomorrow now. The string is merely for asthetics and not holding the tape as it has a glue backing.

Was looking into a unidentified frame (Maclean was suggested), and came across this thread.
What a find, to get a pre war Maclean and a Flying Scot like that

My frame looks very similar indeed, and I found a matching serial on forks and frame: 305
Different location though on the BB shell to right chain stay bit.

Would love to see a follow up of the finished item.

Are you sure there isn't a letter before the number? Maclean used letters pre-war and post war the letter K and then serial number.
Saw your find on FB. Got waylaid with some BMXs at the moment but will get back to this as soon as i can.
Murray Maclean was quite exited when i emailed him pictures and details.
I have since found out that my friends uncle bought it new and gave it to his father around 47. His father gave it a few updates and rode it up until early the 80s.
The Flying Scot i sold to Rab who has written books on Ratrays and Scots. A worthy home. Theres a thread, 56 Flying Scot on here too.
