Re:

Had a reply from Murray MacLean a marque specialist and he thinks the frame is definitely prewar and 1937 vintage judging by the top of the chain stays. MacLean's are difficult to date as the numbering system isn't clear on prewar bikes. Need to find some original transfers and thinking of new chrome and green paint with gold lug lining and box lining.

Re:

Long way off but found these Cyclo sprint wheel extensions on fleabay. Trip to the chromer's at a later date.

I remember using them as a lad, with a toe-strap securing the sprints to the bottom of the drops!
I only used them a couple of times...until the novelty wore off :-D

What were they like to steer with, mydadscondor? Need to find some extension nuts I'm thinking.

Lovely couple of bikes. I don't think stainless spokes would look out of place on these. They would have been lightweight bikes back in their day and very expensive to buy. Probably six weeks wages or more. Stainless spokes were used, as were chromed and double butted.

Re:

Thanks Jonny69. Will go with stainless steel DB spokes on the MacLean now. The wheels on the Scot have cleaned up and spokes are galvanized DB and ok. Trued and now with new rim tape, tubes and tires. The Maclean wheels are 26"x 1 1/4 and have 27" rims so on the look out for rims now. Would love a rear constrictor 26" rim if one turns up. Have a front and airlite hubs. Will post pics.

I can't remember....too long ago, but I seem to recall in made for interesting handling and of course the hassle of changing the wheels over at the start and finish of the event...hence only using them a few times! But it's all part of the retro look! :)
