That's over 6 million dollars per member of congress; that buys an awful lot of influence. Influence that benefits industries and corporations and is often to the detriment of ordinary voters, like environmental protection, employment rights and reducing the size of the market for firearms, by introducing tighter gun control and therefore limiting the profits made from selling them.

Arm the teachers but they won't provide them with pens or pencils. Madness.

Teachers are amazing in so many ways, but having seen them struggle with a OHP I'm guessing that giving them guns won't help...
