Converting Tourer to something a little more 'road race'

I think it will be best to move it on :( I can't easily find any larger chain wheels, bigger than '40 somethings' for the front (4-arm fitting) I am fairly sure he will end up on mine & I will end up on whatever comes in anyway  Thanks for the advice.

Converting Tourer to something a little more 'road race'

To begin - I have no idea of the geometry issues involved, although I'm guessing there are some - I have a Dawes Sardar 'Tourer', the "Go to Mongolia & back", earlier one with dropped handlebars & pannier hangers / rack etc. I bought it new in the dim & distant. My lad who is 16 has 'Wiggo'ism...

'Posting' bikes - recommended carriers ?

Thanks for that - I just put some "Guesstimate" dimension's, on the safe side of correct, into Parcel Monkey & it came up very affordable. Re. a Bike 'box' for packing, are they an item you can 'buy'....or is it a case of trying to 'blag' a 'used' one from Halfords or a Bike Shop ? I did...

'Posting' bikes - recommended carriers ?

I am seriously contemplating offering up for sale my Dawes Sardar....the older, "Go to & tour Mongolia" one from the late 1990's, & when I know how the recession is realigning 'values', buying in with the proceeds, a lighter, road 'racing' bike of comparable value. I want to be able to offer...

    Before I break something.....

Oddly, the seat 'pin' wasn't too bad. Remarkably, the 'inner tubes' hold air & whilst the tyres are not want you'd want to go 'touring' on, looking to be around 20 years old, she's actually gone up & down the road a treat this afternoon. It's a "Bitsa" though.....straight'ish bars, cheapo...

    Before I break something.....

The 'wedge' was stuck....probably not been out since 1960 ! A couple of taps & it 'dropped' & out she came - thanks for the quick response, cheers, Nigel

    Before I break something.....

....I need to take some advice on how to disassemble the front fork assy on my newly arrived Raleigh Lenton Grand Prix. The bike is the 1960 Mk7, the 'stem' is a GB Hindinium. There is the long 'bolt' from the top of the stem down into the forks, which undoes easily & comes out. I...

    Unlucky 13 ?

Well, knowing little & aspiring to less, having been put off by the attitude of the seller of the Giant Team 'rep' & to be honest, thinking it a little 'Hard-core' for my intended exercising.......& having decided, for now, to pass on the offer of a "Freebie" Raleigh Panasonic 'Cadet' in need of...

sending a vintage road bike from UK to Japan

I would suggest that if he 'hits' the Buy it Now, then yes, it would. Obviously if he makes you an offer at a value under that of the B.I.N., the acceptance of the offer, knowing where he is bidding from would make that a matter for you. At the end of the day, if he's happy to pay the...

Raleigh Professional 1984 Team Panasonic SB7197 Finished

Cheers Dave - that is very useful.....I will go & have another  look tomorrow & see 'what's what'. Bit of an update....it is a Cadet by the looks of it, not the higher end frame - no Spaceship logo ?!.....currently stripped right down....but all the bit's in boxes, minus the wheels...

Raleigh Professional 1984 Team Panasonic SB7197 Finished

May I ask.....did Raleigh 'finish' a whole range of bikes in these particular Panasonic Team colours ? or was it confined to these "high end" well specced bikes ? A pal who is only into 'modern' stuff has offered me one - minus the wheels, which he has used in another of his bikes - I wasn't...

sending a vintage road bike from UK to Japan

If you do decide not to sell it him.....'consider' putting him on your 'barred' bidders list. If he decides to bid against your wishes & 'wing it', Ebay will hold him to be the winning bidder, irrespective of his not complying with your listing requirements becasue of the way the contracts...

Giant Team model info ? 80's ? 90's ??road bike

Thanks for that.....it led me to do some hunting around on the Continent & I found this ( but nothing much else ?)....seems to be essentially the same colour way & it is a TEAM model. Oddly, the length of 'head stock' between where the cross-tube & the bottom tube looks quite a bit greater on...

Giant Team model info ? 80's ? 90's ??road bike

Are there any sources anyone can point me to on the Web, archive material or links, for the relative merits or otherwise of what appears to be a light weight steel Giant road bike in 'pink' & white trim. I start from a knowledge base of '0' & work backwards from there. I get the impression it...

    Marin - Bobcat Trail....in 1993 ??

 Hmm.....the one I'm looking at locally looks like that......only "that" if it had been used a a Skip Scraping tool for 6 months   But it goes to show they were about.....I've told the bloke that is what he's got. It's still a bit of a wreck though, although there may...

    Marin - Bobcat Trail....in 1993 ??

Having got my lads Pine Mountain up together I'm contemplating finding something to ride with him. I have an 'old style' Dawes Sardar tourer in very good nick, but I'd like something a bit more MTB'ish. There is a Marin for sale near me....it looks to be a '93 model, rough as a bears...

WTD: BIG BROOKES SADDLE (B33 IF POSS)

Is that an 'Ejector Seat' for the times when the brakes don't cope with the extra 'oomph'....! More 70's German retro, but in it's original 50cc guise, still a very good 'do'er. Have you 'found' Steve Goode at Welshpool ? top resource for Puch 'stuff'.

    First post..first question....not a very "bright"

I'm not sure how much of it is/was "original" to be of benefit to a 1995 bike with the 'right' bits !....not much at a guess. Arguably - apart from the frame, the only bits which are, are the forged White Industries cranks. Be ready to ride tomorrow, all being well

    Measure twice......cut (gulp)

Ok - all noted.....have some more spacers - 15mm's worth - & another "star" thing, as I'm guessing I won't have much luck getting the other one without fubarring it - especially with my track record. Seat is sorted...as suggested on the 'other' thread, it's a 27mm dia. post. Begins to look...
