I'd be really interested to see how it fairs, long term..If it's good, I'd look at getting one too.. ;)

Anybody tried these? Cartridge bearings, 122g, silver, 9.59 posted. What's the snag?

(I'm assuming cartridge bearings/angular contact means like a Hope Enduro/FSA Orbit?)

Are these cheap or is it just that branded headsets are a ludicrous rip-off?

Probably a bit of both Anthony..

Scouring ebay and t'interweb, VP make headsets for Cane Creek - VP are a tad cheaper but lack Cane Creek branding..
 
To be fair to companies like Chris King, far-eastern manufacture is a fraction of the cost, and 6000/5000 series alum is cheaper than 7075. -bearing quality can vary loads too.

I think the ET Mercury is billed as a £50 headset, it certainly looks like one.. just have to see how it lasts. At least the cartridge bearings can be replaced, -as long as they're not some obscure size...

I've got one on my MTB, been running it a few months now. Gets a thumbs-up from me all round although I usually go down the "Made in Europe" route; however, at the time my finances didn't permit buying a needle-bearing job from Miche or Stronglight.
