Whats the best way to clean amber tyre sidewals

As the title says.
I have tried wasingup liquid and Gunk degreaser so far.. any suggestions. Also is there any reason to be worried about using chemicals to clean tyres as old as these? (early 90's)

If your not allowed to use the washing machine, then Muc-Off works well.

BITD (last time i had skinwalls though plan to buy them again), i used cream cleaner (for kitchen sinks etc) and a small nail scrubbing brush, worked really well AFAICR.
