certain religions have the sole of the shoe representing a great insult if thrown or hit - a bit like hurling a used tampon/condom/ nappy (delete as appropriate).

it was funny and i do agree that bodyguards were pretty slow to react.

muslims are funny, BUT on a serious note, he might just be throwing a shoe now - but in a few weeks time he might be throwing something more lethal, like a grenade!
