Just thought I'd share this. I'm sure I'm not the first to do it but here's a pretty effective way to remove zig-zagging from seatposts.
Here is an old Campagnolo Nuovo Record post which has what I would call mild zig-zagging all the way up it's shaft. I fix the tube to the end of my drill via some gaffer tape I've bound around a large drill bit, enough to hold the post reasonably tightly. Then spin through the normal stages of wet-n-dry paper. For this I used 250, 500, 800 then 1200. I find it best not to put drill on fast speed as you might chew away more than you need to. Obviously you'll loose that fine Campagnolo machined 'striping' but in most cases you can achieve a very presentable finish. Also, if your zig-zagging is deep then it's probably best not to do this as you'll loose some width & possibly some engraved text.
