I'd be building it as what it is, rather than what I might wish it was, but that's just me. They were very similar frames, just half-a-pound of butting and internal machining separate them, beyond the decals.
I'd leave it black, regardless, but again, just personal taste and nothing more. The paint looks to be in good condition, and that flat black of the time wore quite well.
Be pretty sweet with a full XT build....
