Three bikes for the cyclocross Kings under the sky,
Seven for the cycle tourists in their halls of stone,
Nine for free riders doomed to die,
One for the road rider on his dark throne
In the Land of Marin where the Shadows lie.
One Bike to rule them all, One Bike to find them,
One Bike to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
I baught this bike in 1993 from FW Evans in The Cut, at the time the touring bike Mecca in London. Its road raced, time trialed, Toured for weekends and months even done a cyclocross race, and tonight it went off road again for the first time in 15 years.
Frame - FW EVANS 531st one of the last batch built in house before the production was out sourced to Roberts and stopped 2 years/30 bikes later.
Fork – FW EVANS 531st
Headset – unknown but has only been re greased once since fitting with Black Gold Grease and that has lasted 15 years. (and still smoth)
Stem - ???
Handlebar – ITM long drops. Not original as they had to be replaced after a crash at 30mph into a hedge with lots of stinging nettles in it, and it was summer and all I had on was a pair of shorts.
Grips – Purple/White/Black Tape
Brakes – ONZA HO’s
Cantilever cable hangers – Peace sign front/Shimano rear
Brake Levers - Shimano
Shifters - Bar end Ultegra
Front Derailleur – 94 LX
Rear Derailleur – 92 XT
Cassette – Shimano close ratio 12 -18 I think (12-28 would be put on for touring)
Chain - Sachs
Cranks – Icon
Chainrings - Icon
Bottom Bracket – unknown untouched for at least 15 years
Pedals – Look Keo (at the moment) sometimes SPD
Quick Releases – Bontranger (Steel front / Ti Rear)
Rims – 36 spoke Mavic front (built for a transcontinental tour it’s a tandem rim)
Hubs – Shimano DX
Tyres – Bontrager rear / Hucinson Blue Line Front
Saddle - ?
Seatpost - ?
Mudguards – Silver plastic, sometimes they come off for the summer, but the bike never looks right without them.
Racks – Blackburn Mountain Rear/Blackburn Lowrider Front/Karrimor Click fix bar bag.
Weight –Loads
Rides like a dream you can ride it day on day, and to me it fits like a glove.
