Next up: AndrewL

Q16) Just how is the DOGS BOLX, did you finish building it yet?

MadCowKev":1kxry0xq said:
Next up: AndrewL

Sorry for the delay the time difference caught me out a bit

1) Who are you ?

Who me? I'm Andrew Ling, 34, Electrical Engineer, owner of far too many bikes and relatively new father.

2) When did you start mountainbiking ?

Well I've been riding off road since I started riding at 3 or 4 but I'd say I started mountain biking around 1986.

3) What was your first mountainbike ?

My first mountain bike wasn't a mountain bike as such... My dad in his wisdom said BMX was a fad and bought me a 2nd hand road touring bike in 1983 which basically became my first mountain bike in 1986 when my mates got their first mountain bikes. Its seen some massive abuse over the years but it still goes to this day!!

First real mountain bike didn't come until after Uni and getting a job etc and was a 98 Peugeot Excess. Still have it too although only the frame is the original bike...

4) What do you have in your pockets right now ?

Two tisses, House/shed keys, WRX keys, $6AUD in loose change

5) What is your favorite mountainbike ?

Anyone who's ever been on an all day epic would with me (which is no one here) knows I love my Turner frames. I also like light XC race bikes so I'd have to say its my 2005 Turner Flux in custom yellow. Sorry the retro bikes are great fun but this bike just eats the bumps and begs you to ride as fast as you can.

6) What's your most hated chore on the household chore list ?

Cleaning up fur balls

7) What bike would you buy if money was no object ?

I'd actually like a Colnago carbon cross bike to do the 20km ride to and from work on at the moment.

8 ) Name one thing that not many people know about you ?

I used to be able to run the 100m consistantly around the 10.5 seconds in my late teens

9) What is you favorite bikepart ?

I like Marzocchi Bombers made between 96 and 99. I also have a thing for Ringle skewers and have a few sets on my desk

10) Which bike (brand) is overrated according to your own humble opinion ?

For me its GTs with the triple triangles and groove tubes etc, never been a fan.

11) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be ?

I'm not a big city person so places like NZ would suit me pretty well as the riding is hard to beat. That said my home town of Penguin (NW Tasmania) is also pretty high on the list as I've spent so much time on the single track in the Dial Range and its one of the few places you can go on an all day ride with your mates and not see another person. Actually a lot of Tasmania's best trails are well kept secrets...

12) If you could go on a road trip with any person (dead or alive), who would you choose and where would you go ?

Though question... There'd have to be good driving roads and great riding....

NZ is great fun but a known quantity. So maybe South America from top to bottom and back again, two blokes a few bikes and lets see what the riding is like along the way - along with all the other cultural experiences...

13) What is you next bike going to be ?

I'd love a Pace, but who wouldn't. Considering I have about 10 projects on the go at the moment my next bike is likely to be for my little boy who currently only 13 weeks old...

14) Which bike(part) do you regret selling

1978 sparkly green banana saddle when I was 10 years old

15) Do you think it is cruel that there is an "S" in the word lisp?

Cruel but fair

16) Just how is the DOGS BOLX, did you finish building it yet?

It took a while but the DOGS BOLX has got a new set of wheels built up on the Bullseye hubs, red Salsa skewers and a NOS red anno Kore bar, so yes its finished for now.

That said I do want to change the brakes and have a set of red Critical Racing cantis which will be put on this weekend before I take it to a night race on Sunday night.

I've also considered building up another red of wheels for it using some red Hope Ti hubs which I've had sitting in a box for many years.

Who's next...

I'll have a look through the forum members and make a decision.

Update: Have selected Mr Orange71, and his question is...

16) Your desire for street cred in the cycling community has led you to the decision to get a cycling tattoo for your left leg. What design are you going to choose?

2) When did you start mountainbiking ?

I first got on a mountain bike in 1982 in New Zealand of all places, but really got into it in 1990 at University.

3) What was your first mountainbike ?

A Diamond Back Topanga. I was at Uni and my mate sold it to me for £150 with Campag Bullet Shifters and Campag rear mech, but nothing else much of note! It was sprayed a garish neon pink

10) Which bike (brand) is overrated according to your own humble opinion ?

Don't want to jump on the bandwagon, but Kleins.

11) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be ?

Norway, though in reality I'd probably get fed up with the long cold winter nights. Scotland maybe. Mabie maybe

12) If you could go on a road trip with any person (dead or alive), who would you choose and where would you go ?

Tricky because I’d probably end up pissing them off and vice versa – so they’d have to be chilled out, flexible, I like a bit of erudition, a good story. Off the top of my head I can’t think who’d fit the bill… I’d go back to New Zealand and drive top to toe or maybe Norway (see above).

13) What is you next bike going to be ?

Looks like a Nishiki (if Mr K swings by ;) )

14) Which bike(part) do you regret selling

I thought I would regret selling some parts but on reflection there aren’t any that I think about. Fortunately I have a selective memory and can’t remember what I’ve sold anyway :D

15) Do you think it is cruel that there is an "S" in the word lisp?

Classic case of onomatopoeia.

16) Your desire for street cred in the cycling community has led you to the decision to get a cycling tattoo for your left leg. What design are you going to choose?

 how did you know?! I would have a replica of a custom built steel frame MTB – like a Groovy or similar

Next up is LGF
