We've got 2 kids, for whom we receive child benefit. We have set things up so that the CB for our eldest is in my name and for the youngest in 'er name, even tho' she receives the money for both into her bank a/c. Reason is that whilstever someone has CB in their name, NIC are paid into the system automatically, so if youre on the dole or unable to sign on, or whatever, you will still be creditted with NICs.
When I set this up over the phone, the guy asked me why all the faffing, so I told him and he thought it was a good idea and perfectly legit.
