I've gone and upset some petrol heads...

I had to chuckle to myself after i'd sent the reply, but I couldn't help it  What it was, a chap on a car forum i'm on was saying that he thinks he should get rid of his 5 Litre V12 engined car as it's a bit over the top considering the 5 mile journey to work and back (it has got problems too-no wonder there then)... I then suggested getting a bike for such a short journey... well, you can imagine the responses I got, I think they call it blasphemy

I did cave in somewhat though, and suggest a little town car, that just made it worse i'm afraid

Anyway, just thought i'd share, as it has given me a laugh :D

Re:

It takes all sorts.

The usual pros of big lazy engines is longevity, with the obvious drawbacks being weight (not always though) and fuel economy.

I guess if his car had problems, that is one thing. For me, for a short commute like that it sounds perfect!

Currently the main 'cars' I drive are all petrol or petrol/lpg. 3.9V8, 3.3V6, 2.4V6 and 2.0l boxer.

If I have an airport run or to the flicks, depending on how many, it is either the big MPV or for less people no gear it will be the Audi, if it is anything local I can get any excuse to use it for it is the Range Rover, (once it is fixed that is..). For errands on the back roads and tracks at speed it is the Forester.

None of these uses suit a bicycle, but if I was doing a 5 mile commute that would be my preference.

Even if I had to drive part of the way and pick up a suitable cycle way.

Can't say I have noticed a lot of negativity towards cycling on PistonHeads, for example.

Maybe I don't read the threads about cycling there though!

You obviously don't. Cyclists are the spawn of satan.

Pistonheads is a significantly more aspirational and 'right wing' forum than this so I feel right at home, despite not really being into cars (2.5 V6 fwiw) and having multiple bikes (not that I can remember when I last rode one!). Their Corbyn thread v the one here are like night and day for example.

I stay away from the cycling threads, it's just not worth the time. And coming from me that's something.

Dunno what being aspirational and being right wing have to do with each other. I aspire to stuff daily. Like digging a big tunnel under your house and collapsing it in

Re:

I don't think we do personal remarks like that on here.

Anyhoo, Techno bides in the schemes so you'd likely kill a few socialists in passing.

Or, just like your great hero, is any amount of collateral damage acceptable?

I agree Techno, Pistonheads does seem to be populated by a more aspirational crowd, materially. There are the teenagers who dream about cars they might one day own, and there are the old farts who have them; who seem more interested in impressing teenagers than getting out and enjoying their cars.

Retrobike seems to be fairly right of centre though, but in a small c way.

Lots of middle aged men who fiddle away in their sheds.

Telling somebody on PH to give up their car is like joining RB and asking members to give up their bike.

It wasn't the pistonheads forum (not sure what that is TBH) :D
