90's Specialized ID help

Retro Newbie
Hi, I just picked up a Specialized bike. Not in great shape (not bad), but missing a few bits. My plan is to clean it up (re-lube everything), get some decent canti brakes, 34T 110bcd ring, 19T cog and a new chain to make it a nice singlespeed.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what model and year this is. For some reason, the stickers have all been taken off. It has 400LX components (crankset, derailleurs). Also, on the chainstay (drive side), it has a Shimano XT sharkfin chain protector. Never seen one of those before. The color seems to be stock, as it still has the "Specialized Direct Drive" decals on the chainstays (and on the fork). Oh, and the pink Specialized bottle cage is a bonus.

Any input would be appreciated. The seat/post was taken off, which was fortunately not rust-welded in.

Hey, thanks! I also checked the Shimano components and they all have the model year marking of "N" (1989), so I think this is a 1990 Rockhopper.

Got all the geared bits off.

Progress so far. Need to get some brakes. Not sure if I should source some canti's or just put on V-brakes I have in my parts box. This isn't a era-correct or a "pretty" build, so I'm thinking just going with V brakes. Besides, canti's are going for premium on eBay...
