Sounds just like my Raleigh Apex (92/93, if I remember correctly). Does it have an Exage Mountain group set?

it indestructable

That groupset is indestructable. I've had my Apex from new and the groupset has outlasted XT stuff on my other bikes - seems strange as the Exage groupsets were always low rent - but this one is all metal, unlike the older Exage stuff which was very plasticky.
