Retro mod... Offroad Master

Re:

Been goofing around with parts combos today. Had to use a v brake up front because no hanger. I used an old clunking Shimano bearing bottom bracket (not a fan).. the only black cranks I had were lx, the rear xtr derailer is a short cage so it doesn’t like the cassette... the xt shifter brake combo seems to okay with the rear derailer. Next is front derailer.

Re:

The rear brake posts were specific for exage mountain, nothing else would fit on the posts.

Great paint work on the frame : )
But to me the blue and red anodized stuff draws attention away from the frame and does it no favours. Plain silver and/or black components...?

Re:

I agree on the red. It’s attached to the grips to lock them down.

One oddity I’ve run into is the bottom of frame seems to have an odd tiny twist. The line of cranks to frame is square but not inline with cassette. The cassette is square with rear frame. It doesn’t make any drivetrain problems but it really bothers me because I can see it.

Re:

Little fine tuning all day... put in sealed bearing bottom bracket, fixed all the problems. At some point in this bikes life someone sawed off the drive side on bottom bracket. Made one face crooked. Needs a new chain also. I can comfortably ride this bike, and I’m not short.. you can toss it around like a BMX

This has been a good read - really impressed with the paint work! Looks wicked!

Tiny update

Took a chance and ordered a set of green “piranha” hubs from eBay. Front and rear (rear missing the cassette)

Silky smooth and look suspiciously similar to ringle. I have no idea what the history of piranha hubs are. It’s a retro mystery. I put them on some ritchey vantage sport rims. Need to sort out back wheel

I do remember Piranha racing but not the history of them now. These little Offroad masters are nice. I built one for my son years ago. Wish I had a picture of it but it was really tricked out with a disk drive, and lots of 3DV, Ringle stem, Topline cranks etc etc... Sadly I broke it for parts long ago.
