Broken rear mech, Shimano Saint

Ok so just got a sparkling new bike (secondhand) and all was well. Not had the chance to ride it but took it put for a spin tonight, changed up to get up a bank and the rear mech decided to get tangled in the wheel and has snapped at the point where the gold bit joins the mech body. Thing is I've sunk all my readies into this bike and don't have the funds to shell out 120 euros for a short cage Saint mech are there any others that will be compatible without breaking the bank ?

And yes I am supremely p*ssed off, had taken the day off tomorrow to go for a blast.

Cheers

I just bought an XT medium cage M771 from Chain Reaction for about £50. And being medium cage can handle rough stuff more than long cage. About the same as other people are charging for SLX.

Thanks gentlemen. Being a bit new to this modern bike thing I wasn't sure if mech were as interchangable as they were bitb, it seems they are. Ta

Yep still are sir, are you aware of the compatibility 'issues' between sram and shimano?

SRAM with a name (rocket, trx, attack etc.) work with shimano but SRAM with a number (x3, x4, x0 etc.) wont.
They have different actuations.

Stick to shimano mechs with your shimano shifters and you will be fine unless you wanted to switch over.

Main thing to worry about is shifters/rear mechs. Front mechs have the same actuation i believe and a chain is a chain, cassette is a cassette (but obviously needs to be correct speed).

So, just gone to the LBS and have come away with a 105 short cage mech, the guy says it'll do t'job. Could afford the 169 euros they wanted for a Saint.....
