After a failed attempt at a more retro build using an orange gringo frame, I found a specialised hardrock frame on Ebay and decided go to town with it.

Aside from.a bit of paint fade and a few chips, the frame was in decent shape after a clean, tax-cut and polish.

As the gringo was v brake, I had to.raid my spares stash which wasnt exactly kid bike specific, so ended up having to use some decent kit not usually found on a kids bike. It has turned out quite nicely so thought I'd share.

I did similar not long back and thought the hardest thing was getting sensible length cranks, there are basically no short options. What length did you go for?

Is it a 26"?

Re:

I went for 165 cranks as it is the only readily available short crankset I could find of suitable quality for the build, and yes 26 inch wheels.

I hope he looks after it.

I was trying to get hold of a set of these cranks, which I think look ideal:

In the end I couldn't get any, the importer told me they didn't bring any that size in. Ended up buying a set from the Frog spare parts list, the ones with the plastic guards.

We built a Felt 12" frame with some Duke forks, 9-sp XTR mech and a rare SLR saddle with the troy lee designs spider print.

Re:

I used 150mm, 110bcd double cranks from Paul milnes cycles, and a single 34t ring for my lady's bike. It's flat round here so no need for a smaller ring than that. Found them on eBay
