''Clunk/Bang'' coming from rear cassette! Advice ?

Went on a ride today and my rear wheel occasionally made a ''clunk/bang'' noise
as I pedalled hard, thought it was the chain jumping on the teeth but it isn't,
so I'm thinking maybe its the pawls not engaging correctly, maybe worn/spring broke?

Rear hub is the Shimano Dura Ace 7401.

Can you still get replacement pawls & springs for these ? Not looked yet!

Anyone got a link showing photo's of the thing taken apart?

Does the cassette come off easily? Cogs come off I know that but that big black thing is another matter, never done it.

The free hub is essentially a sealed item.

Oh god! Does that mean it won't come off then ? Blast these things! I do own a big hammer..lol

The freehubs comes off fairly easily, servicing it is not normally attempted, normally you just replace your big black thing with another big black thing and put the cassette back on.

It's a relatively simple task to replace a shimano free hub

You will need a 10mm allen key though!

Funnily enough my DA rear cassette hub (a more recent model from the mid-2000s) seems to be showing similar behaviour after 7 years of punishment including a lot of cyclo-cross....I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for hints and tips. Then again I'm toying with the idea of converting to Campag 10sp instead as I already have many of the relevant bits for such a swap. Decisions, decisions!

and every online shop can't answer my question! What sort do I need?
