Why don't GT frames seem to crack like other alu frames?

They do have this bombproof reputation - so how did they get it right and other manufacturers of aluminium bikes get it wrong? Discuss.

Even if Zaskars are overbuilt and overweight, they still crack. Usually it's the seattube. I've seen a few happen to my local mtb club members' rides.
And they haven't been dropping or jumping, just "normal" mtb trail riding.

If I recall correctly GT entered the alu. frame game as 1 1/8" headsets started to prevail. Brands like Cannomndale, who have a very bad reputation for frame failures, were making their frames with 1" headtubes and these really did have a habit of falling off under stress. So maybe mud stuck to some manufacturers early.

perhaps it's my selective perception that I've not heard of (m)any failures. :D

I appreciate they have gussets which will help - however they've never struck me as being particularly overweight. 1.7kg or thereabouts for an 18" frame isn't too bad.

Cracked RTS 3

Yep I purchased one of Ebay and found the bottom bracket was shot to bits cracked from one side to the other. Nice of the A*sehole to note it in the listing!
