Dumb question what are the grey sliders supposed to do on the Sachs grip shifters in the pic below?

I have a set and apart from slightly messing up the indexing they seem to do nowt.

you can vary the resistance of the shifting action - harder or softer "feel" on the grip.

Iirc alters the spring tension in them.
It says in the instructions which are either on here or SRAM website.
