This is a seriously interesting read for french members (I'm afraid there isn't an english version though could possibly be translated).
"The bicycle industry of St-Etienne : the end of a local industrial system" Jacqueline Dupuis, CNRS, 1993.
Summary: It describes the rise of the french cycling industry. At its peak in the 70's, to a gradual decline during the 80's. External competition destroyed those who refused to adapt to a changing market. Those that did adapt found it hard to compete with the likes of Shimano and Taiwanese cheap frames. It also points out the buyout of small artisan french manufactuers such as clb and sedis by Sachs in 1992. The partnerships between the spanish firm BH with french manufactuers.
