Zieleman Type Special build opinions?

Have a mid->late 80s (exact date unsure) Zieleman Type Special which followed me home from last years OWMTBC sat in the loft. Trying to decide how to build it and would be interested to hear opions from here

The current build is chaff so will go, mismatched older DA and suntour.

The options are

1. Build with the early 90s DA 7403 gruppo I have in. This includes STIs and dual pivots. The benfits here are that I a) have it in my posession and b) I might get the bike running before the snow returns

2. Find period DA. Whcih would be 6 or 7 speed 7400 and would mean more or less a whole new gruppo.

3. Source period campag. Not sure as I've the stomach to be splashing out on C-Record for this build.

4. Another gruppo. older mavic perhaps?

For sure a stereotypical answer, but it's a Dutch frame and the Dutch were pragmatic with their builds so a lash up (as you'd have it) will work well and be authentic as long as it is reasonable period correct - which rules out C-Record and STis in my book. But what do I know?

Hi John,

The reason of the what you call 'mismatch' of parts is because of that the previous onwer was only 20 or so year old back than. He had the money for the frame and some mediocre parts, but than he ran out of it. He gradually fased all the mediocre parts out with parts he got donated from his uncle. His uncle had more funds and liked to buy the latest every year or every couple of years. It explains why the parts do not show so much wear. It is the reason why the slightly earlier 'mismatch' of parts is on there.

Personally I would pretty much leave it like it like that. I would do some fine tuning here and there. I would replace the QRs with nice Campag examples and the hoods need proper replacements too.

The Zieleman panto'ed stem was sort of home-anodized by the boy. It is not so proper job. I would de-anodize it and give it a good polishing. I would fill the panto'ing with red enamel.

I would preserve the red cables. I would source the same Pelten tape. Mario 'De Fietsenmaker' has it.

I think that is about it. Personally I liked the overall visual appeal a lot. It is easier to hurt it, than to improve it.

Curse my eyes. I've a cracked 753R Raleigh somewhere in the UK whcih was a bike polo machine. Maybe I'll araldite the stays back on that and use that?


Anyhow back to the Zieleman.

See what you're saying Melvin. However the build has no relevance or resonance with me. In a way it would be nice to leave 'as is' but I've neither time or more importantly room for misplaced sentiment. When the bike gets to the workstand (about 4th in line currently :roll: ) I'll make a decision. Could be a really nice rider with the DA....

I reckon find some downtube shifers for your 7403 group and go with that.

Not sure what wheels you are using but if possible I'd also go for a HG cassette.
