Not sure what rapid rise is! Does that work in reverse i.e sits at the largest sprocket naturally and the shifters are used to bring it down the block rather than up it? If so, I think it's rapid rise. Hope that makes sense!

The jockey is a thingyamig, just there to aid the cable, as far as I know, it can be removed should you wish.
 
No good indeed. I put it on and firstly it looked too new. And then I figured it went the wrong way. So I decided screw this, and put an older XT one on. 'Stick with what you know' is something i'll be doing in future!

Is this 'rapid rise' a new thing?? I've not come across it before, maybe just showing my ignorance here!

Erm, not really a new thing, shame it hasn't worked out for you, very nice mech that.
