Working out bb spindle length?

Hi, can anyone give me some advice on how I can work out the bottom bracket spindle length I need? So I've got a 1970s dawes kingpin which I'm completely modifying with new parts. I'm changing the orginal sturmey hub gears to a shimano 7 speed hub gear and I'm going to change the bottom bracket and crankset too. The query I have is how can I work out the length of spindle I need on the bottom bracket to have a good chainline with the new hub gear?

Many thanks for any help. I've looked over the net and on Sheldon Brown but I'm still quite confused!

Re:

Hi, cheers for the reply. I've got a miche primato advanced single speed for it so I know what type/shape of spindle I need, just not what length spindle I need to get.

Miche should have a specified BB length for their chainset which takes into account the dish on the arms etc. to give a centred chainline

I think those cranks use a 110mm bottom bracket for a straight chainline with flip-flop hubs. 110mm Shimano UN-55 is probably what you want, assuming the threading is the same on the Kingpin.

Miche ones are available in 110...but are quoted by Ribble as being JIS! It's probably most sense to use a Miche as they are designed for the cranks - especially at they are only £16 or so at Ribble.

It's really not to be recommended to fit an ISO crank to a JIS bottom bracket. In my experience you stand a significant chance of the crank working loose and mangling its tapers as it only fits partway onto the shaft. Campagnolo standard ones are 111 and would do fine for an ISO crank.
