Wing nuts for 8mm axle

Would I be ok using a 5/16" wing nut on an 8mm axle? or is there a risk of:
i stripping the threads, or
ii the front wheel falling out.

If its 26 TPI then I can't see a theoretical .002 inch smaller causing a problem. Check the arthimetic, but many cycle components in my time had far greater tolerances or poor machining than that. If the wing nuts do feel loose then think again. Think of the hub axles that had rolled threads.
