Why is Postage from Italy such a headache ?

For the love of god, I have just purchased two items on Ebay, a specialized seat and a set of NOS specialized grips from 2 seperate sellers,

Why can them not find postage to New Zealand any cheaper than 45 euro for each!!! its driving me up the wall, I just shipped a whole frame from Italy for 45 euro

So Italian post is pretty hit and miss then? do they insist all international post from Italy has insurance?

BITD we had to ship a few bits and pieces (three frames) back to a prestige Italian manufacturer (as their importer insisted that there was nothing wrong with brand new frames being on the piss).

The bloke at the post office was a bit surprised that we were willing to put ~5000 quids worth of frames anywhere near the Italian post office. Insured or otherwise. (They even had a higher rate for shipping to Italy!)

True to form, one parcel never turned up. One turned up after 2 months. The third took a week......

Cheap?? I'm not on one of the outer moons of Endor Lol, 45 euro is $100NZ thats insane for a small package, I just sent a 1.5kg box with 2 tyres in it to the states for 28 euro
