just trying to build up a proflex 753(ish,prbably!) went to put a headset in and found it used a crazy oversize thingy, got lucky and found one on ebay for £5! fitted the headset today. only thing is i thought it just reduced the 1 1/4 headset so a 1 1/8 fork would fit....but they don't :? . so now i've got to look for a bloody fork with 1 1/4 steerer! i have seen the answer one but the steerer is too short and I would try and a sus fork if one ever existed! and as billy bonus it's got to be cheap! the bike is complete apart from forks and it cost me less than 20 quid so far!!! 8)

I have a 1 1/4 fork on my 753 which I can sell you. I'm breaking up my 753. How about £20 posted? They are Rockshox Mag20. Work just fine. Just missing one plastic cap at the top of the stanchion, but this doesn't do anything and I'm sure you could find one to fit.

Pain!

I feel your pain Gaz :x . How many times have I bought a part that I thought would be perfect but then go to fit it and you need a special tool or it's not quite the right size or it's not compatible with Shimano wotsits.......... you get the idea. Just persevere! T

yeah i'll stick with it. i want build it old school with seven speed and canti's and it will my "reality check" bike! i've been moddy coddled by my 06 kona kikapu full susser with it's xt hyd disk brakes, 180mm rotors. 5 inch of travel at each end, 27" riser bars and super grippy maxxis high rollers. about time i took the luxeries away to make sure i haven't forgotten the "old ways"

I've had a similar problem with my Orange with it's 1" headtube, can get a headset ok but forks and stem have been harder, and trying to find a fork with a threaded steerer the right length for the headtube seems imposible so i'm using a plain steerer and an A-headset now.

1.1/8 has been the standard front end size for years now.

I reckon with a 1 1/4 inch steerer together with a fairly beefy frame even by modern standards it should have very fast and direct steering!
