Why do you do it.....?

1. Why do you buy/build retro bikes?

2. Why do you ride retro bikes?

For me, the answer to the first is that I've always enjoyed bike fettling and so much of the old stuff represents excellent quality for the money

The answer to the second -is more complex; riding a restored bike brings a smile to my face, and often to others too. I don't ride to race anymore; a lot of it for me is the experience of being outside in the woods, on a bike. Retro justs adds to the experience.

I know it's heresy in some quarters here, but I also enjoy combining old and new - I've just bought an RC200 and will build it with a mixture of old and new as there are very few modern frames in my price range that match the pace for weight and quality.

Because I do not like modern matt-black bikes too much.

Because I know I have built the bike by myself from A to Z and touched every single bolt in it.

Because I love clean engineering.

Because these old ones can talk in my language.

and its a bit of showing off. Just a little :D

i dont see where new = good :?

i love fooking people off by blasting past them on my old jump bike in dirty jeans and hoody when they have spent a big wedge on a new full susser to ride around the trail centre

ive remembered theres a heap of a bike in the garden i can harvest for parts to cobble together something that will cost less than a pint :D

Really not entirely sure how I got this interested,

But I put it down to being brain washed subtly by a friend who convinced me that it might be fun! - and actually I like restoring things and seeing something neglected and tatty come back to life again.

i think you successfully answered your own question and might i just say, i toally agree with you!! :D

I find it a healthy thing to channel my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder into. I have spent my life restoring old cars and no matter how you try and how much you spend you can never make them perfect. I mean absolutely utterly perfect- there is simply too much to do on a car, dirt gets in corners, things go left unseen, they deteriorate faster than you can cope with. Its different with a bike- it's pure, everything can be seen and it's size is managable, details can be seen and apreciated. You can get so much closer to perfection with a bike.

Then you can take it down the woods and thrash it's tits off! :D
